Coaching with individuals and consulting to organizations: My approach is tailored to fit the nature of the problem or challenge at hand. That said, I bring a clear ‘identity orientation’ to my work with all clients, as I believe it is hard to succeed — to make smart choices and take wise actions — if you don’t know who you are. Coaching specialties are listed below.
I am at heart a teacher, a healer — a “see-er.” I use coaching as a platform to help people learn about themselves and how they can best contribute to the world around them — whether that be in their organization, their family, or in other vital relationships. I am driven to help people to see; that is who I am. That is my identity. I help people to see the futility of some actions and the wisdom of others. To see one’s unique potential for creating value in the world, To see the power and beauty of living according to who you truly are. I am also the author of two books on identity: Identity Is Destiny: Leadership and the Roots of Value Creation, and The Identity Code: The 8 Essential Questions for Finding Your Purpose and Place in the World. Consider these the two-volume set on personal and organizational identity. When I’m not helping to crack the identity code of an individual or an organization, I love to shoot form; that is, I love photography. I also love fishing, especially, fly fishing. Both of these activities consume me to the point where time seems to stop, where I am fully present, when I am truly in flow. At bottom, I am a humanist. I believe in the intrinsic worth and potential of all human beings. And I work to bring that to life, to your benefit and the benefit of everyone you touch.
I have been a consultant to organizations for more than 35 years, working mainly with a diverse set of large, often global companies. These include Dow Chemical, AARP, Ernst & Young, State Farm Insurance, National Geographic, Maytag, and Fidelity Investments. My focus has been on “identity-based branding” — developing corporate brand strategies based on the core identity of the institution. I love this work. Why? Because I believe organizations — properly led and managed — are the most powerful, value-creating entities on earth and it’s been my job to help make this happen. How? By helping these companies find purpose and distinguish themselves in their fields. I do the same thing for individuals: I help them find, and live according to, their innate purpose. I’ve been practicing identity-based coaching for nearly 10 years and enjoy every moment of it. I am often asked how I got into identity work. It’s a long story that doesn’t really fit into this description. All I’ll say is that my passion for identity started when I was four years old. If you’re interested in hearing that story, find me and I’ll tell it to you. Or, you can read the passage in The Identity Code entitled, My Identity, My Life. It’s all there.
Most of my traditional work history has been with leading brand consultancies, including Siegel & Gale and Anspach Grossman Portugal. I’ve been a partner and strategy director in both firms. I’ve also been coaching now for 10 years; mostly at the executive level for leaders looking to strengthen their leadership brands. But also for individuals in challenging career and life transitions.
My basic qualifications include an ACC certification from ICF and a certificate from the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, where I am a graduate of their LifeLaunch program. My deeper “qualifications” are based on the trajectory of my life, starting with when I first had a sense of my own identity at the age of four. (See above for that particular story!)
I’m on the Board with a focus on marketing.
